What is it about music that makes us need to move to the rhythm? Why is that some songs bring about a flood of emotions within us? Science has proven that our bodies respond to certain hertz levels and the music played within those levels can do wonderful things from healing our body to providing the trigger of emotional catharsis we need. Though there is something more to music and dance than just the scientific connection, there is something magickal.
For centuries we have used music and dance to connect to the divine. We have written songs and danced to drumming rhythms around fires in honor of the great Gods and Goddesses. These rituals were not about a primitive nature, but rather a door of communication between something within us and the divine.
I can’t tell you how many times I have been sitting at my desk or in my car and a song comes on that just makes me need to stop and groove. It connects with me down to my very core. It feels unexplainable, but science has shown us there is something within our bodies that can resonate with the music. Whether it is the rhythmic drumming that makes our hearts beat faster with passion and power, or it is a soft melody that makes our emotions well up inside us begging for release, there is power in the universal language of music. Music and dance can be so much more than just a form of entertainment. It is a connection to our body and soul.
It wasn’t until this year that I discovered moving meditation, or more simply put dancing. I had been a dancer most of my life, but while it was fun for me, I had never allowed it to be anything more. I did a thirty-day workshop that was all about discovering yourself through dance and meditation. It was there I was introduced to the concept of moving meditation. Now I know there are many people out there that crave the quiet stillness of meditation and I do too. Though there are some days where I am so wired, and my body can not even fathom sitting down to be still and those are the days I need to dance and connect with my body and soul differently.
Emotions, stress, anxiety, and depression do not just reside in the mind, those energies can be stored throughout the body. Meditation and stillness are wonderful at relieving those energies, but sometimes we can get so caught up in hiding our emotions, we hide them throughout the body and the stillness cannot find them. Moving meditation is one of the most wonderful ways to get rid of those energies that we have stored throughout our bodies. It forces them out of where our mind has stored them while connecting us with our soul.
As adults in a busy and chaotic world, we often forget how to have fun and enjoy the life we are living. We all have heard “connect with your inner child,” “be playful,” “have fun,” but we often forget how to have fun or even what it looks like. Dancing is a wonderful way to connect with your inner child. Babies will dance to music in their way, not because they were taught but because it moves them to dance. We are not taught to have a connection to music, we just do. So, allow yourself to let go, put on a great song or playlist, and as we often hear, “dance like no one is watching.” Let the music fill you and the movement shake loose all those stored and stagnant energies.
