Happy New Year! Each start of a new year is a perfect time for us to look to the future and set our intentions and goals for the coming year. Many of us call them resolutions but resolutions are often broken, so I call them opportunities. Opportunities, in my opinion, carry more weight than a resolution. When we think of great opportunities and missed opportunities, each intention and goal is exactly that, a great moment for you to take or it will be missed. This is a perfect time of year for us to sow the seeds to grow magically as well as practically.
Each year many of us set goals that are not realistic, expecting that January is a magical month that will make us change. The truth is change comes with work and drive even when the motivation has gone away with the cold winter winds. I too have fallen victim to these types of goals. Year after year, I would set resolutions and goals that were so far out of my reach I barely knew where to start. I would do the “new year, new you” challenge, not realizing it was coming from a place that was ultimately not ready or willing to change. I had set wild goals for my work that were unattainable, such as writing 10 books in a year. Over the years I have learned that while ambition is a wonderful asset, it is often not grounded in reality and balance. Since we are all coming off one of the most trying years we have ever lived through, take a moment to look at the opportunities we have set for ourselves and make sure they are set in balance.
For the last few years, I have started setting two different sets of new year opportunities, magical and practical, though sometimes some fall under both. I will share some of the opportunities I find to be wonderfully magical and practical.
Celebrate Your Health
For many of us, it is a time for us to set the intention of getting healthier, but for some, we set the goal too high. In the past, I did this for many years. In the last couple of years, I decided I was going to change my way of thinking about “getting healthier.” One of the most magical and practical ways we can help ourselves is letting go of the negative impressions surrounding our health. One of the best ways to work toward growing toward a healthy lifestyle is to celebrate your health. So, celebrate how you nourish your body with good food. Celebrate that you can get up and move. Celebrate that you take the time for yourself every day. The more you do this the more the mind and body will love the nourishing good food, enjoyable exercise, and wonderful balance. This opportunity is about changing habits, but it is also about learning to love yourself. It is also a good practice to work on loving yourself every day not only physically but magically as well. Often, we forget how the damage we do to ourselves can affect our magic.
Organize Your Space
Sometimes we feel stuck or even disconnected from ourselves and our goals, and that might be caused by our spaces. At times, our spaces can collect energy from disorganization, and it can make us feel out of touch with ourselves as well as our magic. One of my favorite things to do at the start of a new year is to do a reorganization and a purge if needed. The simple act can be enough to shake off the stagnant energies. Even an old space can feel rejuvenated with simple cleaning and reorganization.
In the last few years, I have set the intention and goal to grow. I wanted to grow my knowledge and the things I learned, not only educationally but what I learned about myself to be the best version of myself. I wanted to grow a garden and beautiful plants to nourish my family and enrich my world. While growth is a wonderful goal, it can easily tip the scales and break the balance. For example, if you wish to grow a garden, it takes a lot of time, research, and planning. So be sure to research what works for you and your life.
When it comes to new year’s opportunities, we all can set goals that are attainable and beneficial for us magically as well as physically.
